MENDELSSOHN String Quartet in F minor Op.80
Simon ROWLAND-JONES Flock of Knot for String Quartet
BEETHOVEN String Quartet in E minor Op.59 No.2 ‘Razumovsky’
Described by The Strad as presenting “a masterclass in unanimity of musical purpose, in which severity could melt seamlessly into charm, and drama into geniality″, the Carducci Quartet is recognised as one of today’s most successful string quartets. Performing over 90 concerts worldwide each year the quartet also run their own recording label, Carducci Classics, and an annual festival in Highnam, Gloucester.
Mendelssohn was deeply influenced by Beethoven’s quartets, both in form and character, and there is something of Beethoven’s Op.95 ‘Serioso’ in the F minor quartet Op.80, a tribute to Felix’s beloved late sister, Fanny. This programme brings the two composers together as well as providing a chance to hear a recent work by Joint Festival Director Simon Rowland-Jones, ‘Flock of Knot’ inspired by a walk on Holkham Beach!
TICKETS £28 (Includes wine served during the interval in the Saloon)
