A talk by SIMON ROWLAND-JONES on the Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin by J.S.Bach
Simon Rowland-Jones has spent a lot of time over the last two years preparing a new edition (in a version for viola) of Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin, which is now published by Peters Edition, a companion to his edition of Bach’s Cello Suites, all of which we heard at NNMF in 2014.
Bach’s own title for the set was Sei Solo ã Violino senza Baßo accompagnato (sic), Six Solos for violin without accompanying bass, and they are dated 1720, the year that Bach began a series of collections of compositions that seem to sum up his philosophy of music. This was the first and Simon will explore the many different styles and dances that the collection incorporates, and why the Sei Solo remain as taxing for the player as any other solo violin music since.
