7PM ST. MARY’S CHURCH, SOUTH CREAKE
PART 2: QUARTETTO ECHOS and CELIA STRING QUARTET
ELGAR String Quartet in E minor, Op.83
SHOSTAKOVICH String Quartet No.8 in C minor, Op.110
MENDELSSOHN Octet in E flat, Op.20
In the second concert of NNMF’s opening day the Quartetto Echos and the Celia String Quartet provide a cross-section of great chamber works, including Elgar’s passionate string quartet, a late flowering in the composer’s creative life, and Shostakovich’s 8th quartet, his moving musical monument ‘To the memory of the Victims of Fascism’. The two quartets finish together with 16-year-old Felix Mendelssohn’s masterpiece, his Octet in E flat, Op.20.
