BEETHOVEN Sonata in G minor Op.5 No.2
JÓN NORDAL 'Pictures on a Panel Wall'
RACHMANINOV Sonata in G minor for Cello and Piano Op.19
We first heard Hjörtur as the soloist in the Cello Concerto No. 1 by Shostakovich at a concert given by the Reykjavik College of Music Symphony Orchestra in the stunning Harpa concert hall in Reykjavik in March 2017. We invited him to come to South Creake the very next day.
Bjarni Frimann Bjarnson is indisposed.
Instead, the young Slovakian pianist, Filip Strauch will perform alongside Hjörtur Pall Eggertsson.
After studying in his native Slovakia, Filip completed his post-graduate studies at the Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen. He also won a scholarship to study at the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory in St Petersburg. He has won many awards and prizes one of which was the opportunity for him to play the Liszt Piano Concerto No.2 at Copenhagen's prestigious Tivoli Festival. He now teaches at the Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen.
Two great works from the cello and piano repertoire frame a relatively recent one by Jón Nordal, one of the leading cultural figures in Iceland. He is well known for his Viola Concerto, the Concerto for Orchestra and Choralis, which was commissioned by Rostropovich for the Scandinavia Today Exhibition held in Washington DC in 1982.
