BEETHOVEN String Quartet in D Op.18 No.3
SCHOENBERG String Quartet No.2 in F sharp minor Op.10
The Marmen Quartet return to NNMF this year following their début in 2015. Winners of Music in the Round’s 'Bridge' scheme and the Royal Philharmonic Society Award, the Marmen Quartet is Associate Ensemble at Birmingham University and Ensemble in Residence at Salomon Smith Chamber Music in Malmö. They are joined by renowned recitalist and opera singer, Lisa Milne, who was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2005.
The programme is quintessentially Viennese, and we can hear how Haydn passed on the mantle of great quartet writing to his pupil Beethoven. In the midst of a personal crisis, Schönberg, leader of the Second Viennese School, poured out his heart in the expressive and deeply lyrical Second String Quartet, based on poems by German symbolist poet, Stefan George; the result stunned Vienna in 1908.
