MELVYN TAN piano AMAIA AZCONA soprano
“Nights in the Gardens of Spain”
Our evening of Spanish music, both for solo piano and voice, takes us to the heart of that country's artistic soul with works by its greatest composers. Works by a ALBENIZ, GRANADOS, DE FALLA, RODRIGO, OBRADORS, TURINA and LORCA create the real world of the Iberian peninsula and not the imagined images of Spain created from the imagination of composers from other countries. Joaquin Rodrigo, composer of one of the most widely played works of the 20th century is here represented by his Four Madrigals of Love and a trio of songs by the hugely gifted Federico Garcia Lorca, composer, playwright and poet, executed by the Nationalists at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, give us a tantalising insight into this genius. Spanish soprano, Amaia Azcona, with her ‘voice of liquid velvet’ Classical Music Magazine is joined by pianist Melvyn Tan for her first appearance at NNMF.
